PANCHIAO, Taiwan — Taiwan's first taxi rank exclusively for taxicabs with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-fueling system will be officially inaugurated this morning at the west exit gate of Panchiao City in the northern county of Taipei, a top county transportation official said yesterday.
Lin Chung-chang, director of the transportation bureau under the Taipei County Government, said that only LPG-fueling taxicabs will be allowed to park in the taxi rank to solicit passengers.

If any non-LPG taxi is found parked in the area, its driver will be fined NT$900 to NT$1,800, Lin continued.

In order to boost patronage for LPG taxicabs, the county transportation bureau will negotiate with Taiwan Railway Station and Taiwan High-Speed Railway Corp. to set up signposts from the exit platform to the LPG taxi rank to make more passengers take the taxis, said Lin.

He said if such an effort pays off quickly, then his bureau will move to set up a second such taxi rank at the Hsintien Station of the Mass Rapid Transit System.

In addition, the transportation bureau will also discuss with the Taipei County taxi drivers association and commercial taxicabs association to work out preferential fares for passengers, so as to achieve a win-win situation for all three.

For LPG taxi drivers, they can enjoy cheaper fuel and can get a total subsidy of NT$50,000 for installing the LPG-fueling system, passengers can spend less on fares, and the county government can achieve its goal of cutting carbon emissions.

There is now a total of around 25,000 taxicabs operating in Taipei County, with 3,000 of them using an LPG-fueling system.
