Broke man runs up ¥90,000 taxi fare
MITO, Ibaraki Pref. (Kyodo) Police have arrested a 50-year-old man who took a taxi from Tokyo to Namegata, Ibaraki Prefecture, Saturday night and failed to pay the roughly ¥90,000 fare.
The suspect, Satoshi Maruyama, who has no fixed address or job, has told investigators he "had nowhere to go" after being rejected by family and friends, according to the Ibaraki Prefectural Police. He was arrested for alleged fraud.
Maruyama caught the taxi in front of Asakusa Station around 9:50 p.m. Saturday and asked to be driven to Hokota, a city adjacent to Namegata.
When the taxi reached Namegata, the driver asked for details of his destination, but Haruyama was vague about where he wanted to go, according to police. The driver notified the police, who found that Maruyama had no money on him.
Maruyama also got the 28-year-old taxi driver to pay the bill for a dinner he had at a restaurant in Saitama Prefecture on the way to Ibaraki, the police said.
